Our Covenant Communities in Albion and Marshall, Michigan
Pursuing Our Mission Beyond Metro Battle Creek
Battle Creek Area Habitat for Humanity was founded about 20 years ago, but we didn't stop there! Approximately 10 years ago we established a "Covenant Community" program in Albion, followed by another one in Marshall about seven years ago. This page explains what a Covenant Community is and why it matters.
- What is a Covenant Community?
A Covenant Community is any community within the geographic service area of an affiliate that expresses the desire to partner with their affiliate to select, support, and build a house with, a qualified homeowner. To become a Covenant Community a proposal is submitted to the affiliate Board of Directors for approval and a partnership agreement is signed.
Albion is a Covenant Community with an Advisory Committee and College Campus Chapter. The Advisory Committee was formed in 2007 and its purpose is to provide community support to the College Chapter. The Committee meets monthly and assists in addressing sub-standard housing, helps with recruiting families for homeownership, volunteer recruitment, raising funds, and helps with home construction.
- What is a Campus Chapter?
A campus chapter is a student-led, student-initiated organization on a high school or college campus that partners with the local Habitat affiliate to fulfill the four functions of a campus chapter. Battle Creek Area Habitat for Humanity partners with Albion College. The four functions of campus chapters are: building, fundraising, advocating, and educating. Here's a summary:
► Building (15 houses in the Albion Community)
Campus chapters partner with Habitat affiliates to build and rehabilitate homes in partnership with Habitat homeowners. There are many ways in which a campus chapter can get involved with building: working locally with a partner affiliate, participating in Collegiate Challenge, or going on a Global Village trip.
► Fundraising (College contributes at least $3,000 a semester, not counting other funds)
Campus chapters raise funds to support the work of Habitat for Humanity International and local affiliates. Campus chapters contribute both to their local affiliate and to Habitat for Humanity’s global mission. Chapters may contribute through house sponsorship, the tithe program (donations to a Habitat for Humanity affiliate outside of the United States), general donation to Habitat for Humanity International and Collegiate Challenge Global Village.
► Advocating (Recruiting volunteers from campus)
Campus chapter leaders and members must be advocates for affordable housing. To advocate for affordable housing means to increase awareness of the problem of substandard housing and to call people to action to initiate change. Campus chapters participate in advocacy events through statistics campaigns, hosting a speaker or panel, hosting a "sleep-out" or "shack-a-thon", signature drives, letter-writing campaigns, or visiting a community meeting.
► Educating (Holding info sessions across campus)
Campus chapters educate others in their campus and local communities about the mission and work of Habitat for Humanity International. This can be done through hosting a speaker from a Habitat affiliate, hosting a speaker from HFHI, creating a chapter newsletter, or creating fliers, fact sheets and brochures.

The Role and Purpose of Advisory Committees
Marshall is a Covenant Community with an Advisory Committee. The Marshall program began in 2003. The Committee meets monthly in Marshall. The purpose is to promote the Habitat program in the local community. This is done through securing funds to sustain the program, identifying potential families for homeownership, selecting sites, and recruiting volunteers for builds. The Committee has been instrumental in building 4 homes in the Marshall community.
► Albion Advisory Committee: The purpose of the Albion Advisory Committee is to provide support to the Albion College Habitat for Humanity Chapter. The Committee will assist in addressing sub-standard housing in the Albion community, help with recruiting families for homeownership, volunteer recruitment, raising funds, and help with building Habitat homes. This committee meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:00pm in Albion at the Habitat building.
► Marshall Advisory Committee: The purpose of the Marshall Advisory Committee is to promote the Habitat program in the local community. This is done through identifying potential families for homeownership, recruiting volunteers for builds, and securing funds to sustain the program. This committee meets the second Thursday of each month at 9:30am in Marshall at Chemical Bank.
